I See You

I have been working on and off on this painting for over a year and truth be told, working more off than on.  Something about it bothered me so it sat (the off time) until slowly, very slowly the realization was the background trees weren't working.  What to do?  Well it should have been obvious but no, so it sat for awhile longer.  I finally made the addition of more colorful leaves covering the offending trees.  You can see the first version below.  So new additions deserved a new title and Hidden Purpose became I See You.  Now the question is:  Who is seeing who?

Island Escape

 

Inspired by my daughter and her husband's recent trip to Hawaii along with their brilliant blue sunglasses!  My daughter swam with the dolphins, sea turtles and manta rays, she's always been the bold and adventurous one.  So playing with this new mixed media technique I wanted to capture their story.  If you look you will find some sea turtles and a few dolphins.  

Funny thing is, my daughter didn't even recognize herself in this painting even though every photo she shared of her trip showed her in these brilliant blue sunglasses, big hat and colorful scarf.  Plus the sea turtles and dolphins, really?  She laughed when I pointed it out.

Peace Among Thorns

 

I've been trying some of artist Karen Knutson's techniques to bring new life and inspiration to my paintings.  I feel like there is another inner artist in me begging to get out and explore.  This voice has been hollering at me for awhile so I better listen.  Where will this journey take me?  Will I be able to give myself permission for complete freedom before scurrying back to my comfort zone?  Will I ever be comfortable with abstract compositions?  Will my inner voice find peace?

The bird house is from one of my drawing classes and where I gave the students the option to add a bird.  One of the students added the bird in front of the birdhouse and it inspired me to create the design for this painting (my drawing had the bird on the fence behind the birdhouse).  So thanks Joan!  I'm always getting inspiration from other artists ideas.

Sunflower Elephant Walk

These were Mothers Day sunflowers I received from my daughter and her husband.  There were 15 sunflowers in all and they were too wonderful not to paint.  They were painted from life not a photo, I'm just late posting them.  Maybe I went a little crazy with the stripes but it makes the sunflowers vibrate (and I love stripes).  The elephant is a little bit of added whimsy. 

I'm taking some time to garden and do some experimental painting with inspiration from artist Karen Knutson.  I will probably add some mixed media into the process and see where it takes me.  

Enjoy your summer!  My crabapple trees were beautiful this spring, now the lilacs are blooming and soon the peonies which are heavy with buds.  The air is alive with bird songs and my toes are finally free to wiggle in the warm weather.  Ah summer!

Coffee Stop

I painted this probably a year ago and never posted it.  I wasn't satisfied with certain areas so I put it away in order to see it with new eyes.  Well life got busy and it was forgotten for a time.  I have a show coming up and wanted to include this piece so with new eyes adjustments were made that finally please me.  Love, Love, Love these umbrellas with the vintage bike, white picket fence and if you look closely you'll see a plastic flamingo.  This is a coffee shop in Colorado that I drove by and had to turn around to get a photo.

Birthday Bouquet

When I receive flowers I have a hard time not painting them and this birthday bouquet was hard to resist.  Because flowers are so short lived I feel good about capturing them with paint, allowing them to live a little longer.

Praise And Promise

I have been experimenting and having fun with mixed media using acrylics, inks, stamping and photos.  This piece is a combination of those elements, the photo of flowers was transferred to the canvas using matte medium and then inked and painted in areas.  A photo transfer is not merely glued to the surface but a method that transfers the image to the canvas and the paper is washed off.  I based this painting on two Bible scriptures; Praise, Isaiah 61:11 and Promise, Genesis 8:22.

I haven't posted anything new for so long due to a remodel going on at home but I have been creating more journal/scrapbooks, acrylic and mixed media paintings plus some plein air oil paintings.  More on plein air at a later date.

Window In The Woods

While taking a walk at a nature center near our home last fall, I paused when seeing this little opening through the trees that allowed a view of the meadow beyond.  It was just a little glimpse of the beauty beyond but thats the way nature is, always calling me to come see what might be around the next bend or break in the woods.

Mancos Bakery

This painting was a real challenge for me, people are always a challenge then you have the store front and it's larger than I normally work, but I'm happy with the results.  This bakery is one of my favorite places to eat when I visit my brother in the little town of Mancos Colorado.  They have some gluten free baked items, the food is good and there are shelves of books you can read while eating.  I bought a book there titled, "Monet's Table" which talks about Monet's life and the food/entertaining in his life, just another view of this wonderful artist.
