I hope you remember Dorothy from the Wizard Of Oz, these are the grown up version of her shoes she clicked three times to take her home.  And really home is where you want to be right now keeping yourself and others safe from this virus if you aren't on the front line.  A BIG thank you to all of you who are frontline fighters and essential workers!

This is my second painting of these red shoes, I love them both but this is a more accurate drawing than the first.  Just like they say, the more you draw something the better it gets.  Being away from painting for so long (7 months) I needed something to jump-start painting and inspire me.  Black gesso was that inspiration, this is my third painting on black gesso and I'm having a great time.  The photos below show you a little of the process; using the green outline was chosen due to being a complimentary color of the red shoes and leaving bits showing through would be interesting.  You can see the panel holder I use for these small paintings, it helps to steady them on an easel.

Remember Dancing?

Another painting on black gesso and Canva paper.  I've been wanting to paint these red shoes for awhile and the black gesso inspired me to try.  The black gesso seems to be helping with painting values and I'm loving it.  These red shoes came from the Goodwill where I purchase many interesting things for still life compositions.  I'm so happy with these shoes I'm going to try painting them again on gessobord.  I've been told that every time you paint the same subject it continues to get better and it's true but it's boring for me, except for maybe these red shoes.  The last time I had a pair of red high heel shoes was college, a really long time ago.

Anyway, these are my Granddaughters old "played out" hightop tennies.  She told me they had once been black, amazing.  I just love the old beat up look and had her promise to give them to me when she replaced them.  I also did a pencil drawing which I posted not long ago.

Shoes can speak volumes.  When I see vintage shoes I wonder about the lives of the people who wore them.  These shoes speak of a young preteen or teenage girl who has just come home from her first school dance and is now on her mobile phone sharing all the excitement with her best friend.  Sometimes it's hard for me to get rid of old favorite shoes mostly because of comfort but also of the memories tied to them.  Why don't I feel that way about a purse, what is it about shoes? 

Holidays are coming so I won't have the chance to paint much.  Enjoy your time with family and friends and be thankful!
