For Sale

Click Here To Buy It Now - $250, Acrylic on canvas panel, 8x10 inches

I took the reference photo for this painting years ago at an antique store.  These chairs were sitting just outside the door, I loved the light, shadows and all those spindles.  I could never figure out how to paint the scene until recently and for some unknown reason it just came to me.  Funny how that works, maybe it was just getting over my fears but I'm happy with the results.  I have some other chair photos, maybe time for another series.

At The Fair

Click Here To Buy It Now - $200, Acrylic on linen panel, 8x8 inches

Minnesota has a great state fair in fact they call it the great Minnesota get together and it is.  The fair is huge and attracts tons of people, its a fun place to photo people, umbrellas, animals and all sorts of things plus eat to your hearts desire.  I painted this from a photo of the fair I took last summer taken from a distance away and just happened to see this great row of colorful umbrellas.  Most photos don't turn out to be paint worthy but once in a while you get a good one, this was a good one.

Walk Time

Click Here To Buy It Now - $150, oil on gessobord, 6x6 inches

While out taking some photos I was heading into a parking lot and this little dog on a leash was running at me barking and yapping the whole way.  I though he wanted a piece of my ankle but turns out that's how he greets people.  Little Max greets everyone he sees this way whether he knows you or not.  You could see the love light in his humans eye, he thinks Max is the best and Max seems pretty happy too.

Rest Stop

Contact Artist is interested in Purchasing, oil on gessobord, 6x6 inches

This is one of my Minnesota State Fair photos.  I love capturing people doing ordinary things and people on their smart phones is a sign of our times, a reminder of remember when.  Makes you wonder what the next big thing will be to revolutionize peoples lives, for now this little ordinary piece of time has been caught and recorded.

Waterfall Sanctuary

Click Here To Buy It Now - $150, oil on gessobord, 6x8 inches

I thought about calling this painting Backyard Sanctuary; when I was a child my Dad built a waterfall pond in our backyard and eventually enclosed it into an addition to our home.  We loved that waterfall and the goldfish, it was our sanctuary.  This started as a plein air painting then I finished it in my home studio.  I deliberated over this painting for such a long time, at first it was to light then it was to dark and I couldn't seem to get it right.  I gave up at one point and put it away but I'm happy with the results.

The Blue Goblet

Click Here To Buy It Now - $75, acrylic on gessobord, 6x6 inches

This was a little exercise for fun that I painted with my plein air group on a day that drove us inside due to the weather.  When setting up the still life someone added a blue green goblet to offset all that orange.  My goblet turned out more blue but that's called artist license.

Fairytale Cottage

Click Here To Buy It Now - $150, acrylic on gessobord, 6x8 inches

This is a real place in Door County Wisconsin.  Walking around one small town I happened upon this little cottage and couldn't resist getting some photos.  It's actually being used as a gift shop with all kinds of creative gifts.  I put off painting this sweet place because it didn't look real, it was so cute; I finally developed the nerve to try. I was lucky enough to visit Door County in the fall and the colors were amazing.  This is my second try at painting the cottage, my first effort was an oil painting.

Fall Meadow

Click Here To Buy It Now - $150, oil on gessobord, 6x6 inches

This is another plein air painting I finished a couple of weeks ago.  For some reason I was drawn to the five trees in the background and the wonderful grasses made it perfect.  The combination of horizontals with the vertical trees is very appealing.  I can almost see a step towards the abstract for me down the road and I never thought that possible, which I hope means I'm growing and expanding into new areas.

Fancy Top

Click Here To Buy It Now - $100, Acrylic on gessobord, 6x8 inches

Time for a new pumpkin painting or two and time to start playing with my acrylics.  I love all the fancy stuff on this stem.  There's a lot more color in the background than the photo shows, some deep blues and reds.

Commissioned Painting

Sold - oil on gessobord, 6x6 inches

I was asked to paint the little snap shot below, someone's fond memory from their childhood.  The original photo was lost and all that was left was a small grainy print from the original.  What a lovely way to preserve a treasured family moment.

Gaggle Of Geese

Click Here to Buy It Now - $300, oil on gessobord, 6x6 inches

There's a trail close to our home where I ride my bike and a goose family raises chicks every spring.  One early morning this spring I knew the family would be there so I grabbed my camera to take photos and off I went on my bike.  The light was so great and the geese although wary of me, allowed me to get close enough for some good photos.  I love how the adult geese keep the chicks between them and always have a sharp eye out for any danger.  I can't imagine trying to keep tabs on 12 to 15 babies and right next to a busy street, yes the trail runs along a busy street.

White Porch

Click Here To Buy It Now - $150, oil on gessobord, 6x6 inches

I was sitting on a little shaded patio surrounded by large trees and an arbor on one side painting this lovely old house.  This view shows just the back end of the home, the front has a huge porch with a turret on one end.  Hopefully I will be painting the turret someday.  It was a beautiful morning and the sunlight was perfect, I even had a friend to paint with.  What could be better!  Plein Air (painting outside) is a wonderful treat.

Tea Cups And Lace

Click Here To Buy It Now - $300, oil on gessobord, 6x6 inches

This is the second painting in my tea cup series.  I added an old lace table cloth that belonged to my Mom.  I wonder if I will ever use this table cloth other than for still life set ups.

Tea Cup Stack

Click Here To Buy It Now - $300, oil on gessobord, 6x6 inches

I've started a little series on tea cups using the same two cups as a personal challenge.  So the idea is to play with different backgrounds, hopefully different techniques and different compositions.  Tea cups are so pretty and feminine but today they are just a sweet remembrance of the past, well at least in the home.  There are restaurants and fun places you can go for tea parties and I have thrown a tea party for my friends but tea cups don't hold up for everyday use.  They also don't travel well or hold enough but we still love em.  What is it about tea cups and tea parties we love so much?  Maybe just to capture a reminder of the past.  For those who love tea cups, I have a few more to post.

Barn Reflections

Click Here To Buy It Now - $200, oil on gessobord, 6x8 inches

We have this great historic round barn right in my neighborhood which is now converted to a unique store selling handmade items, antiques and more.  This is another plein air painting, the day was partly sunny, the reflections in the pond were wonderful but the wind was a little rough.  I had to wait for the wind to die down to capture the reflection otherwise the ripples broke up the water to much.  Rock weights kept my palette paper, trash bag and paper towels from blowing away.  I did have to go running at least once for something that got away from me.  These are the things you deal with in order to be outdoors and it was worth it.

Tree Shadows

Click Here To Buy It Now - $150, oil on gessobord, 6x8 inches

More plein air painting.  I fell in love with the early morning light filtering through the yards and creating these great shadows on the street.  So I set up my easel across the street to capture the light not thinking that this shadow area would be a great spot for people to park.  I must have asked three or four people if they would move their vehicle so I could continue to paint.  Everyone was very nice and moved.  Finally a postal truck pulled up and parked in the shadow and I was thinking she was just delivering mail, no she was stopped for lunch.  Fortunately I was far enough along not to disturb the mail carrier's lunch.  The more I paint outdoors the more stories I will accumulate.

Antique Ride #2

Click Here To Buy It Now - $300, oil on gessobord, 6x6 inches

Love this antique car I found in Colorado so I had to paint it twice.  I always go for walks when visiting my brother in a small town in Colorado and I have happened across some great subjects to paint.  So far I've completed 5 paintings from photos on my walks there.  It's also a beautiful place to visit, maybe time for another trip.

Antique Ride #1

Click Here To Buy It Now - $400, oil on gessobord, 8x10 inches

I found this antique car on one of my walks while visiting my brother in Colorado.  It was beautifully restored and just begging to be painted.  I wanted to look inside but figured that might make the owner nervous cause I spent a bit of time wandering around the car and taking photos from different views.  Speaking of different views, I painted another more foreshortened view soon to be posted.

Plein Fun

This was my happy place this summer!  I had to lose my studio to a remodel in order to boot me out the door and finally try plein air painting.  Here I was on location painting the Round Barn with my plein air group.  I will be posting the Round Barn painting soon.

Minnesota State Fair

My oil painting "California Trek" was accepted in the Minnesota State Fair Art Exhibition this year.  I'm feeling very honored to have my piece chosen.  I also won an award from the Minnesota Figure Study Collaborative and the piece sold.

So fun and great encouragement to have my friends take the time to see my painting and pose with it!  They could have been eating corn dogs or fried ice cream on a stick.  Thanks gals, you're the best!

Desert Jewel

Click Here To Buy It Now - $400, oil on gessobord, 8x10 inches

Saguaro Cactus are majestic and walking through a forest of them is magical.  I grew up in the Arizona desert, climbing boulders, picnics in dry washes, floating down the Verde River on tubes; the desert was my playground and I love it.  So when visiting my sister in Arizona last winter I saw this lovely saguaro on a small hill, the early morning sun making it shine like a jewel in the desert.  Some people have a hard time appreciating the beauty of the desert but for me it's home and there is beauty everywhere.

Overgrown Silos

Click Here To Buy It Now - $100, oil on gessobord, 6x8 inches

Another plein air painting this summer.  This was a challenge as it started out cloudy then the wind came up and we had periods of sunshine and back to clouds.  I love these old silos with the plants growing on them.  the silos are right in our little downtown area behind a feed store, a bit of city meets country.

Summer Meadow

Click Here To Buy It Now - $100, oil on gessobord, 6x8 inches

My first plein air painting!  If you aren't familiar with plein air painting, it's a french word for painting outdoors.  Having my studio closed down for the summer was the needed push to finally try plein air.  It was either no painting at all or go outdoors.  I've always been afraid to get out there with the bugs, sun, heat, wind and whatever happens along.  I was surprised to find that I love being outdoors with the birds, flowers and fresh air, you can conquer the negative aspects.  And I've been painting with a group which is more fun than being alone in a studio.  Now that I'm back in my studio it's time to play catch up and get some things posted.

Praise And Promise

Click Here To Buy it Now - $300, mixed media on stretched canvas and framed, 9x12 inches

I have been experimenting and having fun with mixed media using acrylics, inks, stamping and photos.  This piece is a combination of those elements, the photo of flowers was transferred to the canvas using matte medium and then inked and painted in areas.  A photo transfer is not merely glued to the surface but a method that transfers the image to the canvas and the paper is washed off.  I based this painting on two Bible scriptures; Praise, Isaiah 61:11 and Promise, Genesis 8:22.

I haven't posted anything new for so long due to a remodel going on at home but I have been creating more journal/scrapbooks, acrylic and mixed media paintings plus some plein air oil paintings.  More on plein air at a later date.

Connecting

Not For Sale - oil on gessobord, 6x6 inches

My Granddaughter was not posing for me this time, I noticed her curled up in the chair and knew it was a perfect natural pose.  I call her my favorite model because she is great to paint but the only time she sits still is when on her iPhone.  She is a creative social butterfly, I love painting and creating with her; one day she may be posting paintings of her own.  I'm so fortunate to share my love of the visual arts with her!
